In the last few years, the production of olives and olive oil across Europe has become a huge challenge. Soaring temperatures, a now-traditional lack of rain and wildfires in the production areas of the main olive oil-producing countries - Spain, Greece, Italy - have led to record low harvests and plummeting national stocks. This, combined with the high level of inflation and rising logistics and production costs contributed to unprecedentedly high prices. Please note that for the period June 2022 - June 2023, Spain reports a 44% drop in the amount of olive oil stocks, and Italy - 40% less.
Forecasts for the 2023-2024 campaign are for another weak harvest, and the future availability of olive oil on the market has been questioned. The record high prices are expected to rise further. By the end of August 2023, the delivery price from a producer of real extra virgin olive oil reached nearly 9 euros per liter. This price does not include logistics and warehouse costs, nor 20 percent VATin Bulgaria.
Faced with this difficult situation, the European authorities expect a wave of adulteration, blending and fraudulent presentation of olive oil products. EU control bodies are warning of even more serious quality control measures, and the message to the end user points to a deeper knowledge of the main quality categories of olive oil, a better understanding of the conditions of certification and origin, and the importance of reading product labels.
